From Expert to Process Consultant

Dear Accountant,

Now we’ve understood the 3 types of ‘advisor’ (last post) and in particular, the Runagood® definition, it’s essential to also understand the difference between an ‘expert consultant’ and a ‘process consultant’.

An accountant, lawyer, doctor, uses hard (expert) skills, to personally solve client problems.

A business consultant, in the Runagood® definition, uses soft (process) skills to work collaboratively with clients to understand and resolve their problems and ambitions, in any part of the business, together.

Hang onto that critical distinction because you must stop thinking about the clearly defined past (of accountancy) and start thinking instead about the ill-defined future (of consultancy) which is where your client journey will now be.

In my next post I’ll deal with the human processes for successfully managing business owner relationships.

With kind regards from

Duncan
