Having created the Investors in People Standard in 1991 we were tasked by government with marketing it nationally. There was a strong uptake from public sector organisations (with an eye to compliance no doubt) but much less enthusiasm from businesses.

The standard response was “show me it makes money and I’ll do it”. So, the Department for Education and Employment commissioned us to carry out this detailed work which proved beyond doubt that developing people pays.
